United Nations Day celebrated in Laos

October 26th 2014

The 69th anniversary of the United Nations was celebrated today at a reception hosted by the UN Country Team in Lao PDR. Speaking at the event held in the UN House in Vientiane, the UN Resident Coordinator Kaarina Immonen reaffirmed the UN's commitment to support Lao PDR on its journey towards graduation from the Least Developed Country status.

Representatives from the Government, development partners, civil society, business and diplomatic communities were in attendance at the celebration that marked the UN Day 2014.

Ms. Immonen congratulated the Government on its notable efforts towards building a prosperous and developed state. "Since joining the United Nations in 1955, Lao PDR has proved to be fully committed to the values of the United Nations charter and has actively contributed to the global agenda. By taking major steps in turning the Millennium Development Goals into reality, a lot has been accomplished towards building a prosperous country."

The United Nations has provided support in promoting sustainable and inclusive growth, and improved delivery of services to the population in Lao PDR since the late 1950s.

The UN Resident Coordinator thanked all their partners, including the Government and the National Assembly of Laos, donors, the civil society, the business and diplomatic communities for their collaboration: "Without your contributions, our achievements would have not been possible."

"We look forward to further joint work with all of you in the spirit of UN values, for the good of Laos and its people", she concluded her remarks.

UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. The purpose of the United Nations is to bring all nations of the world together to work for peace and development, based on the principles of justice, human dignity and the well-being of all people.

This year, in the spirit of the UN day and as a personal gesture, a donation will be made by the members of the UN Country team in Lao PDR to the 'Home of Light' school for blind children in Ban Thongpong, Vientiane.
