VIENTIANE – Photographers and young people from all over Laos are invited to enter their snapshots for Laos in Focus - picturing the MDGs photo competition, to be launched on Friday September 6th.
The contest, organized as a joint initiative of the United Nations in Lao PDR and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aims to focus attention towards the key development issues in Lao PDR such as poverty, nutrition, maternal mortality, education, gender equality, health, environment and unexploded ordnance (UXO). Contestants are invited to reflect on some of the causes, solutions and achievements made in various areas of development through photographic media. The contest is being supported by Beeline.
For the first time in Laos, the contest will also include a special category for mobile photography. Whether a camera-savvy amateur photographer or casual young snapper who likes to capture the world with a mobile phone, everyone can submit their photographic masterpieces to one of the two categories available in the contest for a chance to win one of the attractive prizes. The categories include “General Entry”, which is open for all “Lao Nationals”, as well as Young Snapper, open to those under 25 years of age.
While the winner of the main competition will be chosen by a panel of judges, the public will vote for the winner of the ‘Young Snapper’ category in the popular social media site Facebook. Prizes for winners include a Nikon and Canon DSLR cameras and Samsung S4 smartphone.
Entry is free and after choosing a category, contestants can submit up to three photos each. Only Lao nationals are eligible to enter the competition, photos must have been taken in Laos in the past two years, and the photos must relate to one of the nine Millennium Development Goals.
The contest, open now for submissions, ends on Sunday, 13 October 2013 at 23:59 Vientiane time, and the winner will be announced on 24 October, as part of the global UN day celebrations.
