Vientiane - The Lao People’s Democratic Republic is in a period of robust economic growth and dynamic change.  One would applaud the remarkable progresses in socio-economic developments and poverty reduction; with annual average growth of 8 per cent since 2006 and a US$12.79 billion economy, Laos is certainly enjoying one of the highest growth rates in the region.

 

This has enabled the country to halve poverty since 1992, and the government has set the target to reduce the poverty rate further from 23.2 per cent in 2012 to 19.17 per cent in 2015.  The per capita income is estimated to reach US$1,700 for 2015. 

Former WHO Representative to Lao PDR, Dr Liu Yunguo awarded the Medal of Friendship by the President of Lao PDR

Vientiane - At a Medal of Friendship presentation ceremony led by the Minister to the Ministry of Health, Prof Dr Eksavang Vongvichit acknowledged the contributions of Dr Liu Yunguo, former WHO Representative to Lao People’s Democratic Republic from March 2011 to February 2014.  This medal was awarded by the President of Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mr Choummaly Sayasone for Dr Liu’s contributions to development of health care in the country.

Dr Eksavang expresses his sincerest appreciation of Dr Liu’s dedication, in assisting the Ministry of Health to work to attain the health-related Millennium Development Goals; and especially on his strong support to mobilize technical and financial resources to combat the dengue outbreak in Lao PDR in 2013, the worst of its kind in the history of the country.

“Healthy Living” the recurring theme for World Diabetes Day

Vientiane, 14th November 2014 - Most of us know someone who has diabetes; it is a disease that affects more than 347 million people worldwide and account for 1.5 million deaths in 2012 alone, with almost 80% of diabetes deaths occurring in low and middle income countries, frequently affecting those aged 35 to 64.

“The World Diabetes Day highlights the growing global problem of diabetes, where the increase is driven largely by the rise in overweight and obesity, affecting many people in their productive years and studies are showing that children are at an increasing risk of developing the disease” said Dr Juliet Fleischl, WHO Representative to Lao PDR.

Many countries are documenting higher number of newly diagnosed cases of type 1 diabetes particularly in younger children. The other type of diabetes, Type 2 has also been increasing reported in children and adolescents and is attributed to childhood obesity and physical inactivity.  

Textbook launch marks new learning opportunity on human development for Lao students

Vientiane, 4th November 2014  Lao students will be able to study human development as an academic subject thanks to a new textbook launched at the National University of Laos (NUoL) today. 

The book, developed by the National University of Laos in collaboration with the National Economic Research Institute, Ministry of Planning and Investment (NERI) and supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will be a tool for students to learn about the concept and key dimensions of human development. The Lao-language book is designed to expand the students’ understanding of people-centered development that does not only focus on economic growth, but also on the quality and accessibility of basic services, such as education, health and social protection.

Lao PDR and People’s Republic of China sign an agreement to enhance cooperation against trafficking

In September 1st 2014 the Government of Lao PDR and the Government of the People’s Republic of China signed the Cooperation in Preventing and Combating Trafficking in Persons agreement in China. This agreement is significant step towards the two countries having more effective and tangible cooperation mechanisms to combat trafficking in persons and to enhance the cooperation in the border areas.  

Survey found essential medicines prices lower in public sector

WHO - At a recent dissemination workshop to show the results of a survey done on essential medicine prices, Assoc. Prof. Dr Bounkong SYHAVONG, Vice-Minister of Health says the results contradict most public perception, that prices of essential medicines are lower in private clinics or pharmacies than the public sector.
