The excitement and anticipation of a group of twenty-one students at Vientiane High School were tangible when they finally saw the prints of their photographs spread out on a table in their class. In the context of International Women’s Day 2017, UN Women and the International Labour Organisation ILO had asked them to participate in an awareness-raising project with the topic “All women are working women”. Students went out to take photos around this theme and the resulting images show the full bandwidth of female labor in Lao PDR: Working women on the photos include mothers, nurses, street vendors, and weavers – all of them contributors to the country’s economy.

Thai Princess Becomes UNODC Goodwill Ambassador on the Rule of Law for Southeast Asia

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime today appointed Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand as Goodwill Ambassador on the Rule of Law for Southeast Asia to raise the profile of, and support for, development efforts that address the impact of crime on society, and that contribute to justice reform. HRH Princess Mahidol has supported UNODC efforts in the region over recent years, increasing visibility and mobilizing partnerships, most recently promoting the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February. This day marks the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971. Every year since 1997, communities and government organisations have been raising public awareness of the value and benefit of wetlands on this day. The Ramsar Convention is named after the city of Ramsar in Iran where the agreement was signed.

Lao PDR’s 5th National Human Development Report and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development´s (UNCTAD) Least Developed Countries Report 2016 were launched on Tuesday by Dr. Kikeo Chanthaboury, Vice Minister of Planning and Investment, and Ms. Kaarina Immonen, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative. The launch was attended by government officials from line ministries and development partners.
